We’re adding a new bird seed mix to our shelves this winter which is eco-friendly and kind on your wallet

With the night’s drawing in – and household budgets feeling the squeeze, feeding our wild garden birds might not be on the top of your list of priorities. We always encourage feeding birds food all year round, but the autumn and winter is when they need an extra helping of nutrition.

We’re conscious that households also need to keep costs to a minimum and have a solution that will help the birds whilst not damaging your weekly budget.  Whilst buying cheap birdseed, we need to ensure the quality is good enough for our birds.

This year we have grown extra crops on the farm for our new ‘Rectory Farm Mix’ which costs a little less than our current ranges thanks to its lower food miles. It contains wheat, OSR, white millet, black sunflower seeds, kibbled maize, and barley, delivering a hearty winter food.

And thanks to nearly 100% of it being grown on the farm, the Rectory Farm Mix has almost zero food miles and therefore it costs a little less than the other seed mixes you will find online and in the shop.

Fay & Abigail helped develop the mix and said: “The majority of grains found in our bird food mixes are grown on the farm, but we wanted to produce one that was 100% locally grown.  Not only does this mean that the blend is more sustainable, but we can also offer it at a lower cost as we’ve bought in a minimal amount of stock.”

We’d love you to bring in your own containers when you buy any Eyebrook mixes or products to help on packaging, but we have now also introduced plastic-free bags in our bid to be as sustainable as possible.

As many seeds as possible are grown on the farm to out into our mixes, this is why our Rectory Farm mix is such good value, as it is literally grown in the fields surrounding the farm.  As well as reducing cost and road miles, there is no palletisation or plastic wrap, the seeds are carted by tractor and trailer to the farm yard.

Although the birdseed is cheap, we ensure this doesn’t effect quality.  All our seeds are grown to our exacting standard, cleaned and quality checked to ensure the best food for your garden birds, especially as the weather gets colder.
