The merry month of May!

Beautiful Hawthorn blossoming here on the farm at Rectory, why not come and enjoy it too following our permissive footpaths here at Eyebrook Beautiful Hawthorn blossoming here on the farm at Rectory, why not come and enjoy it too following our permissive footpaths here at Eyebrook Beautiful Hawthorn blossoming here on the farm at Rectory, why not come and enjoy it too following our permissive footpaths here at Eyebrook

May is in full bloom and the hedgerows at Rectory Farm are drenched in hawthorn blossom.  There are beautiful shades of whites and pinks – the month of May is when the Welland Valley looks at its best.

Weather woes

Here come the girls! Our gorgeous pedigree Hereford girls relaxing in the sun

When the cows are lying down it’s supposed to rain – if only this was true! It has been one of the driest Springs known here, the farm is really suffering with a lack of grass and our spring sown crops are also desperate for a drink. On the positive side, shepherding is a delight every morning in the Spring sunshine, the sheep and cows are all out in the fields enjoying the sun on their backs.

Birds on the farm

A handsome House Martin visiting the yard here at Rectory for a drink

Although the farmyard is empty of livestock, it fills with swallows, swifts and house martins. With the lack of rain we switch on the tap to ensure they always have a puddle from which to gather mud for their nests.

Nesting Time

Look out its a nest! Birds nest it the strangest of places... the Blackbirds have nested on a trailer axel! 2 little eggs cooking away Look out its a nest! Birds nest it the strangest of places... the Blackbirds have nested on a trailer axel!

Each year we have a surprise nest on the farm – this season it’s on a trailer chassis! Once we realised we whizzed the trailer back to its position and are pleased to say Mrs Blackbird is back on her nest!

Walk on the wild side

Nature Trekers on an amble to see what wildlife is visiting the farm today

Last week Naturetrek tour guide Neil took a group of nature lovers on a tour of the farm and the Eyebrook Reservoir, sighting grey partridge, yellowhammers and osprey to name a few. We had a good chat on food and farming, a tour of the mixing shed, and finished off with tea and cake on the lawn in the sunshine!

There are still a couple of spaces left on the next tour in June – visit Naturetrek for more details.

A recent review from a Naturetrek tour at Rectory Farm….

‘This was probably one of the most enjoyable trips with Naturetrek I have done, and I’ve done quite a few now! The family and the entire set up of the farm are inspirational.’
